Using Internet May Cost You your Life in Mosul

MOSUL —the Islamic State (IS) has so far executed over 150 people people in Mosul on charges of using the Internet service against the rules of the extremist organization.

After Mosul fell into the hands of the IS militants in mid-2014, the Iraqi government banned the internet and mobile phone services in the area. However the group maintained communications alive by allowing internet service providers to operate via privately-owned satellite systems that were outside of the government’s control.

The extremist organization recently issued new rules that will censor anyone in Mosul from using the Internet, aiming to detect those who use the internet to provide intelligence to the anti-IS forces.

The jihadist group has thus far executed at least 150 people charged with using the internet against IS, according to sources inside Mosul.

A source in Mosul revealed to BasNews that IS has restricted the use of internet, but it has not completely banned it since it makes a great deal of money out of the business, and it spreads its activities via internet.

IS charges at least $20 for 1GB of internet use, while the people are already suffering from financial crisis, the source added.

Saeed Mamuzini, an official from Mosul, told BasNews that using the internet service in Mosul needs permission from IS and it is absolutely censored. The internet service however is limited to social networks and messenger use.

IS previously sent a message to all the Internet service providers operating in Mosul that they must provide certain information to the information centre of IS such as the number of subscribers, the full names and addresses of all subscribers as well as information on the technological devices that they are using.
